Dr. Puffer was Chief Strategist, Global Fixed Income at BCA Research. She provided independent macroeconomic analysis and fixed income investment strategy to top institutional clients worldwide. Paid subscribers to her weekly reports included the world's top pension funds, money managers, trading desks and hedge funds. She recommended successful value-added portfolio strategies and specific trades, guiding investors through the European crisis, Japan's monetary policy regime shift and extraordinary central bank intervention. Her team published a weekly bulletin and in-depth special reports with clear investment recommendations and trade ideas in major sovereign and credit markets. Special Reports included in-depth analysis of European vs. U.S. corporate credit markets, emerging market debt in the context of investment grade  bond portfolios, and individual country/regional reports. Bondholder Litigation Support

Dr. Puffer created and implemented a Liability-Driven Investment strategy (LDI) for NAV CANADA’s $3Billion pension plan using derivatives. She was responsible for all aspects of investment management and asset mix for the pension fund. She restructured the real estate and equity portfolios. The strategy reduced the volatility of the plan’s solvency ratio and improved the risk profile of the pension fund. She worked closely with the Board, senior management, unions and the plan actuaries to develop a governance process for the pension plan including risk assessment, risk budgeting, optimization, and risk monitoring.

Twist Financial provides expert witness reports, pills testimony and litigation support in various areas of the capital markets.  Previous cases have included the BCE vs. Bondholders case that went to the Supreme Court of Canada, high yield emerging markets debt, and determining the current value of damages due to Telus bondholders in a case of early redemption.

Evaluation of the Canada Mortgage Bond Program

Dr. Puffer was part of a large team of consultants evaluating the Canada Mortgage Bond program which finances the majority of mortgage lending in the Canadian market.  The focus of the study was on Canada’s residential mortgage market from 2001-2006, with an update following market developments since August, 2007. Twist Financial component reports included a report on Capital Markets, a report on Canadian Mortgage Markets (with KPMG), and a Literature Review, with Prof. Paul Halpern and Prof. Alexandra Mackay, from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. Marlene Puffer
Dr. Puffer founded Twist Financial Corp. in 2005 to provide strategic advice, macroeconomic and investment strategies, research and analytics, education, and litigation support to institutional investors and other market participants. Her leadership and broad experience in the capital markets and academia provide clients with a unique perspective along with innovative and pragmatic solutions.

Dr. Puffer is a Trustee on the Board and Chair of the Asset Liability Committee of the Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP). She has been Chief Strategist and Managing Editor, Global Fixed Income Strategy at BCA Research, a global leader in independent macro investment strategy, and she has held senior roles at PIMCO Canada, Legg Mason Canada, BMO and RBC. She began her career as a professor of finance at the Rotman School of Business at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Puffer holds a Ph.D. in Finance and Applied Statistics and a M.Sc. in Business Administration from the University of Rochester William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration, and master's and bachelor's degrees in Economics from the University of Toronto. She is a CFA charterholder and holds the ICD.D designation granted by the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Dr. Alexandra MacKay is a Senior Lecturer in Finance at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.  Her expertise includes fixed income, derivatives and risk management. She is the Academic Director of the Master of Finance Program and Director of Finance Programs in Executive Education.  She teaches courses in fixed income and derivatives at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She also teaches Executive Education programs, including the Financial Acumen Program for TD Group and Financial Literacy for Directors and Executives. Dr. Mackay holds a Ph.D. in finance from York University and M.A. and B.Sc. degrees from the University of Toronto.

Maureen Stapleton is a Senior Lecturer in Finance at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. She teaches courses in financial markets and investments. Her expertise includes asset allocation, pension funds, mutual funds and ETF’s. She has 25 years of industry experience in investment analysis and institutional portfolio management. Maureen was EVP, Fixed Income Management at UBS Global Asset Management, and SVP, Institutional Asset Management at RT Capital.  Maureen holds the CFA designation, she is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute, and she holds MBA and M.Sc. degrees from the University of Toronto. She is an Investment Advisor to the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan, a former Director of the Toronto CFA Society and a past President of Women in Capital Markets.
